What Is Your Excuse #2

“But all the guests made excuses. The first one said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go look at it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five pairs of oxen; I must go and try them. Please excuse me.’ A third person said, ‘I just got married; I can’t come.'” ~Luke 14:18-20, NCV

After receiving such a grand invitation, those invited began to make excuses. Before you start to accept these excuses, realize that they are bogus. Every one of them is simply a dismissal of the invitation; a declaration that they do not want to come to the feast.

How many people today are offering excuses to the God who invites them?

What excuses do we offer for not obeying the Gospel? Jimmie Lovell, founder of World Bible School, used to say that everyone had more right to hear the gospel once than anyone had to hear it twice. Aren’t our churches full of people who have heard the invitation of Christ over and over and over, yet remain unmoved. Whatever has their attention, it is not the most needful thing. What excuses will they offer?

What excuses do we offer for participating in sinful activity? By nature we will try to justify all of our behaviors. The excuses to not have to make sense, they just have to allow us to continue.

What excuses do we offer when we fail to develop spiritual disciplines in our lives? Why are there Christians who have been a part of God’s family for decades who still cannot manage to pray and read their Bible every day? And if they cannot do these simple things, how can they possibly walk deeper into the Spiritual?

What excuses do we offer when we fail to give in a way that honors God? All of our accumulated possessions will be piles of ashes after Jesus comes again. Why are we placing these purchases above supporting financially the works of His Kingdom?

What excuses do we offer for not sharing the Good News with others? Marvin Phillips used to say that we have the only news that everybody in the world needs to hear. We used to sing a song called, “You Never Mentioned Him to Me.” (video below) Maybe we still should.

“Never make excuses. Your friends don’t need them and your foes won’t believe them.” ~John Wooden

These may be difficult questions, but let them provoke you to spend some time thinking and praying about them. Jesus’ parable is not over! More in the next post.
