This is the last in a series of three posts.
In the last revealed words of Jesus in your New Testament, Jesus wanted you to know that He is coming again.
Jesus, the One who says these things are true, says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! ~Revelation 22:20 (New Century Version)
Notice the attitude of John in regard to the coming of Christ! “Amen, Come Lord Jesus!” This is an expression of submission meaning agreement. I know that we want to see our grandchildren grow up and we have things we’d like to do. But when we consider the promises of God and the hardships of this life, Come, Lord Jesus! Old exiled John on Patmos could scarcely wait to see his friend Jesus yet again. This time he would be with Him forever.
All through the NT we are told of the return of Christ for judgment and to bring about the new heavens and new earth. Read the vision of Peter in 2 Peter 3:10-15:
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. (New International Version)
Peter says three times in that passage that we have the perspective of looking forward to the return of Jesus. In his last words he wants us to know that He is our everything, He can be trusted, He is coming again.
Finally, He invites you to come along.
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life. ~ Revelation 22:17 (NIV)
God has always invited sinners to come to Him for salvation. Jesus invites the hungry and thirsty. The burdened and oppressed. The weary and lonely. He invites all. You’ve never done anything in your life that would keep you from that invitation. You may not accept – that is up to you. But the invitation is there. It is fitting that the last words of Jesus are the offer of salvation.
The last words of Jesus are beautiful and important. They show us His concern for our eternal salvation. He is our Everything. He can be Trusted. He is coming Again. He invites you to come along. Will you not hear these words of the Lord today? They are His last recorded words – and they remain on the last page of your New Testament as a permanent invitation to receive His grace.
