The Best Blessed Life  Psalm 1

Why would churches go through such expense, so much work, all the challenges to be faced in order to teach children and reach out to young people? We hope to help children and young people set their direction in life in such a way that they will have a blessed life. We believe the Bible teaches us the best way to live. We believe the Bible shows us the only way to eternal life in heaven. We believe Jesus Christ is the answer to our most significant issues: How to have a great life, how to be assured of eternity with God when we die.

The first Psalm is the introduction to the Psalter – the songbook of Israel. It introduces themes found throughout the Psalms. It portrays the best path through life … a life that is blessed by God. It shows in both negative and positive ways that there is a kind of life that is honored by God. What an honor it is that the One who created us and knows us best has given us some instructions on how to have a blessed life.

The Blessed Life Avoids Evil Influences (vs. 1). Three kinds of evil influences are listed here.  Sinners – those who fall short of the standard of obeying God. Wicked – those who positively violate a rule by disorderly conduct. Mockers – scoffers, those who treat God with contempt. There are also three acts of progression here: Walking – occasionally conforming with crowd, Standing – more of a fixed association, Sitting – no longer a spectator, but one of them.

The Bible has many encouragements to watch the company we keep!

Jeremiah 15:17 I never sat in the company of revelers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand was on me…

Proverbs 12:26 The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

Set the stage for a blessed life by avoiding evil influences.

The Blessed Life Loves God’s Word (vs. 2).  The word “love” is used and misued so much today. One of the indications of what we really love is what we make it our business to know.  Whether it is career or recreation, we put a great deal of time, money, enthusiasm, and attention on the things that matter most to us.  The truth is that the Bible is seldom on that list. What priority are you giving to Bible reading, prayer, paying attention to holiness?  That won’t make you the coolest guy in the room – but it will give you a more blessed life.

Delight in the Word of God is a reality for those who love God and want to be close to Him. Nine times in Psalm 119 is this term used.

Proverbs 2:12-15 Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, who have left the straight paths to walk in dark ways, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.

Not just a weekly delight, but night and day in the Word.

The Blessed Life Is Solid and Strong (vs. 3-5).  It is like a tree planted by the water.  It is a picture of vitality and fruitfulness. Even the best of men fall short of this description, but this is the ideal standard or model toward which we strive.

It is not like the Chaff (4).  The wicked are not a dead tree … fallen tree. Chaff is neither living nor useful, only fit to be removed and scattered.

Strength to Stand in the Judgment (5). Again the comparison is made between the wicked and those who love God. On the great day of judgment those who have lived the Blessed life will stand securely before the Father.

Conclusion

Verse 6 – God watches over the life of the Blessed. The happiness to be found in living for God is greater than any to be found following after the sinful path. The Blessed Life is characterized by …

Avoiding Evil Influences

Delighting in God’s Word

Benefitting from Strength and Life
