I can no more do justice to this awesome and wonder-filled topic than a child can grasp a star. Still, by reaching toward the star the child may call attention to it and even indicate the direction one must look to see it. And so, I stretch my heart toward the high, shining love of God so that we may be encouraged to look up and have hope.” ~ A. W. Tozer
Could God Really Love Someone Like Me?
For God so loved the world …
How could God love the world? Just look at the shape it’s in. But just out of range of our vision God sees what we seem to miss. His creation, it was very good. His image is to be found in every man, woman and child. His plan continues to operate. He plans to spend eternity with His creation. His interventions continue to take place, creating opportunities as he works in our lives. His ability to make straight that which is crooked gives us hope that He can love in ways that are beyond us. Could God really love someone like me? Yes, He can love us as we need to be loved … unconditionally. He can see beyond our mistakes and faults … and rebellions. He is heartbroken when we ruin our lives with sin. He heals our broken hearts.
Will God Ever Stop Loving Me?
…That he gave his one and only Son…
The cross is a great mystery of love. It is hard to understand how One So Worthy sacrifices all for the unworthy. The cross tells us that God will never stop loving us. He paid an immense price in order to save us. Jesus endured so much – more than we will ever know – to save us. The resurrection that follows the cross promises new life. I do not see any indication at all in the story of the cross that God will stop loving us. Even when we sin God loves us. In fact, the cross is a demonstration of God loving us while we were still sinners.
How Can I Get Close to God?
…that whoever believes in him…
Taking God at his word is harder for some people than it is for others. But before we label it all a fairy tale and reject the teachings of Jesus we should ask ourselves if there is some philosophy or way of thinking or teacher that gives us a clearer picture of a path to God? Trying to find my own way hasn’t been very successful. God has opened the door to eternity with a simple request … believe. More than just mentally accept that Jesus lived and died … but adopt His teachings for your own life. Follow in His steps. I find it assuring and amazing at the same time that the Creator of the Universe invites me near to His heart … when I believe Him. Jesus came to lead us to an eternal life with the Father.
Can I Ever Have Peace of Mind and Heart?
…shall not perish but have eternal life.
No matter who is reading these words at this moment… we are not so different. All of us have felt that we are walking the wrong direction in life. Grief, guilt, fear of death … fear of God … disappointment with others and ourselves … all of these plague us. The voice that speaks in our thoughts during the quiet moments late in the night tells us that everything is not well with us. Loneliness and regret can cause us such uncertainty and anxiety. Numbing the pain with alcohol, pornography, substance abuse, multiple relationships, casual sex, maxing out your credit card, eating without restraint … none of these have given us the peace we desire and need. There is one vital event that faces us all: death. There is One who has an answer for death: Jesus. By trusting in Christ and following His will for our lives we open ourselves up for a peace that is beyond our ability to understand.
Andrea Crouch wrote a chorus that connected with a generation. “Jesus is the answer, for the world today, Above Him there’s no other, Jesus is the way.” That’s still true. This one verse – a favorite for all time – reveals to us that God answers the heart-questions that we have, in Jesus Christ. I hope and pray you will trust Him with your life today.
I have a limited number of copies of Don Umphries’ great little book called You Can Have A New Life. I would be happy to send it free of charge to anyone who is wanting to start a new Christian life. Let me know and I will get it in the mail to you. If you’d like to read something online, I’ve always thought highly of Joel Stephen Williams’ book available free online: What Is Christianity?
Thanks for reading,
