Revival Prayer: Word

Why is it that some Christians, although they hear many sermons, make but slow advances in the divine life? Because they neglect their closets, and do not thoughtfully meditate on God’s Word. They love the wheat, but they do not grind it; they would have the corn, but they will not go forth into the fields to gather it; the fruit hangs upon the tree, but they will not pluck it; the water flows at their feet, but they will not stoop to drink it. From such folly deliver us, O Lord. . . .” ― Charles H. Spurgeon

God create within us a deep hunger for Your Word. Remove our self-sufficiency and teach us your ways, your truths. Tear down our rebellious attitudes and energize an obedient spirit within us.

Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all day long. … How sweet are your words to my taste,  sweeter than honey to my mouth! ~ Psalm 119:97, 103

Now by this we may be sure that we know him, if we obey his commandments. 4 Whoever says, “I have come to know him,” but does not obey his commandments, is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we may be sure that we are in him: whoever says, “I abide in him,” ought to walk just as he walked. ~1 John 2:3-6

Pray for the strong desire to abide in Christ and to walk the path He lay out before us. Ask the Holy Spirit to stir the hearts of all believers to know the Word of God. How easy it is to think we’ve got enough of God’s word and we get the gist of it, so no need to really study it. Forgive us, God, when we let the dust gather on our Testaments and think we’re smart enough to make it through this life without You. Help us not to be just ‘hearers’ … but ‘doers’.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. ~James 1:22-24

Show us ourselves as we really are so we can see what you can make of us. Help us to handle your word with honesty and search it for wisdom. Energize our spirits through this time in the Word and revive within us a burning desire to be your servants. Numb our ears to the critics and skeptics who do not know you. Open our hearts, God, to the beauty of your word…and help us to shape our lives around your teachings.
