There is no such thing as a ‘secret sin’ when it comes to God. Everything within our heart is laid bare before Him. Even the sins that you have justified and lied to yourself about – He sees them all.
So it is no surprise when Achan has hidden away some idols in his tent that the children of Israel began to lose their battles (Joshua 7). Even with a great leader and man of God like Joshua, God could not overlook the sin that remained with them. Confused and broken, Joshua seeks an answer from God. Here is what the Lord said:
Israel has sinned. They have violated My covenant that I appointed for them. They have taken some of what was set apart. They have stolen, deceived, and put the things with their own belongings. This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from you what is set apart. ~Joshua 7:11-12
That last sentence… ‘I will no longer be with you unless you remove from you what is set apart.‘ In today’s prayer ask God to explore your heart and remove any sin that is remaining there. Ask Him to reveal any sin that you’ve hidden from yourself, or that the Enemy has helped you to justify. I wonder how many blessings are withheld because we have allowed unrepented of sin to linger in our hearts?
“There is no repentance where a man can talk lightly of sin, much less where he can speak tenderly and lovingly of it.” ~ Charles H. Spurgeon
God, by your grace, please remove our sins from us.
