~ Prayer Text for Today is Jeremiah 1 ~
Courage is a quality we all hope we will have when we most need it, but we can’t really know until we are in the moment. To follow God in a godless culture demands a certain amount of courage. What are we willing to endure for the sake of The Way? If you doubt it, spend a moment at Voice of the Martyrs. At this very moment there are Christians who are enduring torture, violence, and even death without renouncing their King. In comparison, not much courage is demanded for me to live as I do.
But on the other hand, courage is not measured in comparisons. Courage is measured by your response in the moment you most need to take your stand.
When he was Twenty, Jeremiah a call from the Lord to be a prophet. It wasn’t to be an easy assignment. He wouldn’t be surrounded by people of like faith to carry him forward with encouragements. There would be no acknowledgments of his bravery and faithfulness. Instead his life would be threatened over and over again by godless idolatrous people who despised him for reminding them that they have walked away from God.
I don’t know what age it is when we no longer feel like one of the young ones, but it happens. In wistful moments we think about what we could have done for God if we had only had the … courage. Sometimes we fail to realize what we can do for God now, if we only have the courage. God didn’t accept Jeremiah’s excuse of youth or a lack of the right words. I am pretty sure He regards our excuses the same way. But God did give Jeremiah some of the few words of encouragement he would ever receive.
Stand up and tell them everything that I command you. Do not be intimidated by them or I will cause you to cower before them. Today, I am the One who has made you a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the population. They will fight against you but never prevail over you, since I am with you to rescue you.” This is the Lord’s declaration.
I wonder if we think God is any less on our side than He was Jeremiah’s? I don’t know what area of your life is calling for courage today. The need to break out of a spiritually deadly relationship? Facing a life-threatening disease? Willing to serve in a frightening situation? Overcoming your own personal issues to take a stand for God? We can use God’s word to Jeremiah to provide a prayer for courage and boldness.
God, I desire to stand up and share your commands with others around me. I repent for being intimidated and for cowering when I should have stood firm. Would you work within me to give me Your strength. Help me during days when the Enemy is working against me to stand strong and depend on your to rescue me.
I like the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson on the Courage we need to face each day.
“Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
