On This Date!

On July 18th…

1927 Ty Cobb set a major league baseball record by getting his 4,000th career hit. He hit 4,191 before he retired in 1928.

1936 The first Oscar Myer Wienermobile rolled out of Gener Body Company’s factory in Chicago, IL.

1953 Elvis Presley recorded “My Happiness” as a gift for his mother. It was his first recording.

1992 Whitney Houston and bobby Brown were married (oh well.)

1999 David Cone of the New York Yankees pitched the 14th perfect game in modern major league baseball history in a game against the Montreal Expos.

It is a great day for birthdays! English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811), Richard “Red” Skelton (1913), Nelson Mandela (1918), John Glenn (1921), James Brolin (1940), Martha Reeves (1941), and Ricky Skaggs (1954).

It was the day that John and Margaret (Maggy) Dobbs were married 24 years ago.

In the year that we were married the price of gas was .89 cents per gallon. A postage stamp was .24 cents. The stock market crashed on Monday, October 19th of that year. The world’s population reached 5 billion. It was the year of the Jim Bakker scandal, the appearance of Bart Simpson, Fatal Attraction, and Lethal Weapon. At the music store (there was no iTunes) you could buy Michael Jackson’s BAD, George Michael’s FAITH, or decide neither with U2’s WITH OR WITHOUT YOU. Ronald Reagan was President and Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister.

It was before the days of YouTube, so there are no unauthorized videos of the decorating of the car. (YouTube has only been around for six years!) Twitter didn’t exist (Twitter creator Jack Dorsey was only 11 years old). It wasn’t a Facebook event. The one-day-he-would-be-a-billionaire Mark Zuckerberg was only 3 years old! There was no website detailing the information about our wedding because Mosaic, the first public web browser was released to the public in 1993.  If nobody tweeted it, facebooked it, youtubed it, browsed to it, or saw it happen via live cam online…did it really happen? I believe so!

A lot of stuff happened in 1987, but nothing more important to me than saying “I Do” to Margaret Willingham. Two women became a part of my life that day, although Nicole was only 10! John Robert came in 1989. I had a lot to learn about being a dad … not sure I’ve got the hang of it yet. Grandparenting is easier!

I thank God for the love with which he has filled my life.  Happy anniversary Maggy! I love you!
