New Week on the Coast

Original Composition By Mike Tassin

Well, it’s a new week on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I hope you will take a few moments and view the video above. It is a new, original composition from an Ocean Springs native who wants to raise awareness of our continuing rebuild efforts on the Coast. I am aware that this blog became a source of information for many readers about what was happening on the Coast. I am not writing about that as much these days mostly because we have no volunteers on the ground, nor are any on the schedule until November. I hope you will not interpret that as a lack of need or that the work is finished. Far from it. My neighbor down the street is just about to hang sheetrock. Yes, that’s where he is in his rebuild … not finished at all. Still living in a camper.

Yesterday I continued my series through Hebrews. The podcast should be up this afternoon sometime and the message notes will likely find their way to this blog.

Yesterday afternoon several of our teens and I accompanied the Ocean Springs youth group to a Mobile Baybears game followed by a presentation from Scott Dawson’s Safe at Home program. The game was nothing to get excited about, but it was fun to watch. The heat was not terrible … more like ‘bad’ … but bearable. Following the game we heard a few songs by the Mount Hebron Gospel Choir, which I really enjoyed. After that Scott Dawson had a good (but lengthy) message and invitation. Following that American Idol contestant Mandisa took the stage. Mandisa performed a marvelous soul medley including songs like I’m Every Woman, Respect, Proud Mary, and  The Greatest Love of All. She concluded with a few gospel numbers from her new CD which I enjoyed. The headliner of the night was Building 429 (named for Ephesians 4:29). Awesome set with a great message. It was late getting home, but a great afternoon and evening with friends.

This past Sunday our local Church on the Rock served in almost 40 projects around town. I think if the church could be known as ‘those people who are always serving others’ … combined with personal interest in individuals … some amazing things can happen in the community. I appreciate the good example set by this church in our community.

Interesting story: Obesity rates increased in most states, no state showed a decline. Anyone trying to lose the pounds is fighting against their own weakness and urges for sure…but also against our culture. While I was eating the healthy lunch Maggy prepared for me, Paula Deen was on the television preparing macaroni and cheese, cut into cubes, wrapped in bacon, and deep fried. With a smile on her face. I won’t lie. I wanted a bite.

I’ll close this post with Building 429’s marvelous song You Carried Me, which has it’s own website.

YOU CARRIED ME
Words & Music by Jason Roy It’s scary when you wake up and realize that you’ve nearly missed it all. You’ve been so numb that the scripture you quote becomes just a heartless answer to another dull question. So tired that your worship songs become a string of meaningless words that are hardly worship. And for me, it’s always been because I lost sight of what mattered and began running a race that I could never win. Just as the corporate world begs for people who love to climb, so does the music business world. I am by nature a person who LOVES to climb. Funny, I’ve never found a place of rest on any ladder I’ve ever climbed, literally or figuratively. I think there is a good reason for that. The voice of God is a sweet whisper that begs us to stop climbing and find rest in the shelter of His wings. Take a few moments to look at your life. You will see, just as I did, that every good thing in your life was simply a blessing–not a reward, but a blessing. Another moment that God blessed you far beyond what you deserved. How did you get there?? He carried you.

I’ve been so busy, I missed the reasons
I missed Your love, and I nearly missed it all
Still You’ve loved me, and You’ve healed me
You’ve given all and it brought me to Your cross
I stand only because You’ve given me grace to walk
Only because
You carried me
You carried me
You carried me through it all
And I believe
Yes I believe
You’ll carry me all the way home
Cause mercy covers all
I know the scripture, I’ve known the songs
I sang the words from my hollowed heart
But You’ve spoken softly through the storm
I’ve heard Your voice and I’ve felt the calm
I stand only because You’ve given me faith to walk
You carried me
You carried me
You carried me through it all
And I believe
Yes I believe
You’ll carry me all the way home
Cause mercy covers all
I know that you love me
I’ll never doubt it I can’t live without it
Your mercy has found me
I am astounded, I can’t live without it
You carried me
You carried me
And I believe
Yes I believe
You’ll carry me all the way home
Cause mercy covers all
Mercy covers all
And I believe
And I believe
I believe
