There’s some voice in many of us that says that life goes better when we figure things out on our own. Do we really need God’s guidance in the everyday areas of our lives? The problem is that the more I try to manage my own life the bigger mess it becomes. And it’s not just me … I see it all around.
Psalm 19 affirms that the teachings of God are perfect, refreshing, trustworthy, radiant, pure, eternal and ‘in keeping them there is great reward‘.
Even so, how many times have I thought that God’s will for my life would be anything but those things? The wisdom of our age teaches us to pursue our own dreams, our own happiness, our own ideas of what makes for a great life.
But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. ~Psalm 19:12,13
It’s the hidden faults that no one else can see that keeps me from the joy that God wants me to have. It is the willful sins that rule over my heart that take my life into directions that hurt others … and hurt me.
So I don’t know if we’re just stubborn …
Or think we know more than God …
Or we’re at the mercy of the influence of sin in our hearts …
Or we’re just going to keep re-defining sin until it isn’t sin any longer…
Or we’re helpless in our pain and searching…
Or we just resist God even though we know we should yield.
Whatever it is that keeps us going down the paths that hurt … I think the only way back to God’s path is to listen well.
Do we imagine that one day we’ll proceed to that place in our hearts where we no longer desire to sin … where we are truly overcomers? The real overcomers are those who stare at their temptations but their words and meditations are not centered on defeat. They are centered on the Lord, the Rock and Redeemer.
“No healthy Christian ever chooses suffering; he chooses God’s will, as Jesus did, whether it means suffering or not.” ~ Oswald Chambers
Any other path is leading away from where we really want to be. Let Him speak to you … and Listen Well.
