For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but to save the world through him. (John 3:17)
Humanity was lost. The creation was in ruins. Thorns were growing and expectant mothers were weeping. The thoughts of men were only evil continually. The creation that had received God’s stamp of approval was now languishing under the weight of darkness. Even the attempt to destroy those who were evil could not undo what had become of Eden. (Genesis 1-10) God had to do something radical to turn the tide of rampant destruction caused by sin. No matter how much pain his creation caused Him, love still remained strong. Thankfully, He was not wondering what to do, he was following through with His ancient plan to redeem fallen man (Revelation 13:8).
God could have condemned lost humanity from his throne of holiness. He had every right to squash the rebellion, and with it every human on earth. The only thing that stood between God’s righteous wrath and our swift destruction was love. And while we were still sinners, the Messiah was dying on the cross in our place. Today, the only thing standing between you and hell is love expressed in Jesus Christ. God sent Jesus into the world to save the world through Him.
Somewhere along the way you may evolve into the mindset that it is your strict obedience to God’s word that has saved you. Certainly God has expressed His will for us in the Scriptures. You could adopt the view that your good deeds will be such a blessing to God that He will save you because of them. God has asked us to do good deeds. But unless you are able to keep that law flawlessly and do enough good for others with only pure motives, then it is still true that the only thing between you and hell is love.
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us… (1 John 3:16). Thank God every day that when things were at their worst His love was shining the brightest. When we could not save ourselves, He saved us in spite of ourselves. If you will accept these truths in His way, then the salvation from hell that comes through His love can freely be yours (Romans 6:1-10). It will only come through Him.
