You do not read very far in your Bible before the issue of food is addressed. That is not surprising. The subject is the beginning of life and the sustaining of life.
God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you, for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it. I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.Evening came and then morning: the sixth day. ~ Genesis 1:29-31
Not only is food mentioned, but everything we know about the healthiest and most nutrient-rich sources are exemplified here. Green. Organic. No GMO. Green leafs, bright fruits and seeds. Sounds like heaven … to a vegan.
What I haven’t really thought about before is that the first temptation humanity ever faced was a decision about eating.
“No! You will not die,” the serpent said to the woman. “In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. ~Genesis 3:4-6
I shouldn’t be surprised at the ongoing nature of temptation in regards to food…. food that is good … delightful to look at … desirable. Those of us who face the weakness of giving in to eating the wrong things and the wrong amounts of things are facing an ancient foe. And just think, at that time no one had killed an animal, melted it’s fat and fried anything in it. That only came after the Fall. So did the shame.
Just like our ancient parents, we have choices set before us. We have the potential to choose well, or not very well. The war with food temptation is as old as humanity. If you read a little farther in Genesis you’ll notice that the first sin in the brave new world recorded for us involves food. Food offered for sacrifice to God … but still, food.
If your struggle involves food, remind yourselves, friends…
*You are not alone
*You are not the first nor the last
*You are not helpless
*You are not to listen to the lies of the enemy
*You are to trust the Father to help you
*You can do this with His help.
In my previous post I wrote some about twelve things I knew about weight-loss. Continuing some thoughts about this theme for a while. Thanks for reading, JD.
