Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you. ~Psalm 143:8
If you are just taking some initial interest in following Jesus Christ with your life, then you should know that someone has been praying for you. Whatever set of circumstances that has led you to this time of decision, be assured that God wants nothing more than for you to live with Him forever in eternity. Taking your first steps require courage and faith, but God will help you. Here are some first steps to following Jesus Christ.
Prayer. Pray and ask God to help you have the wisdom and knowledge to follow His path. Invite Him to help you know how to become a part of His kingdom.
Trust. We need to place our trust in Jesus Christ – having faith that He alone can save us and take away our sins because of his death on the cross and subsequent resurrection from the dead.
Decision. We need to examine our lives and turn away from anything that is leading us away from God. He will give you the power and strength to do this as you yield to His will. This is what is meant by the word ‘repentance’ … making the decision to ask God to help you make needed changes.
Baptism. Baptism is our identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ as we die to our old way of life, are buried in water, and rise up to live a new life. The Bible describes this as a time of ‘washing away our sins’.
Growth. This new Christian life is a life of growing closer to God day by day, month by month, year by year. It will be characterized by service, prayer, participation in the church community, and sharing the gospel with others. God knows you will need some time to grow into these areas and the reality of his grace means that your salvation is not dependent upon these activities … but all saved people seek to grow in them.
If I can help you with this, please let me know. No doubt those leave unanswered questions. I have a limited number of copies of the booklet YOU CAN HAVE A NEW LIFE. I’d be happy to send it to you free of charge. Let me know in a comment or a message. Thanks for reading, John.
