DISCOVER2013In just a few weeks (November 1-3) our church will host its annual youth rally called DISCOVER! This event has always amazed me because it is quite a big event for a church our size. Truly, we depend on the help of a lot of people from a lot of places.

When we moved here five years ago, Jason Barnard was the Youth Minister for Forsythe Church of Christ. He very capably steered the DISCOVER ship, bringing in the best-known speakers and singing groups from among churches of Christ. This past summer Jason moved to Atlanta and our new youth minister, Wyeth Wright, is getting his feet wet as we try to make DISCOVER a success!

I think we have a great lineup of speakers and classes. I am looking forward to hearing Patrick Mead, Joe Almanza, Les Ferguson, Jr and many more. Robin Gough is the Campus Minister at LSU for the South Baton Rouge Church of Christ. Robin and his team of singers will lead us in worship. We have special guests each day. On Friday night the Robertson teens will speak … Sadie, John Luke, and Cole all from Duck Dynasty. (Of course, they are hometown folks around here and we are thankful they are able to make an appearance – given their hectic schedules.) On Saturday evening we have the nationally known Christian comic Bob Smiley – who is hilarious! Also Theatron from Harding University will perform.

Classes will also be great! Les Ferguson Jr will talk about rebuilding life after it falls apart. He knows about that. Spencer Carroll will talk about overcoming the regrets of life. Jason Barnard will teach about the importance of youth ministry. Zach Dasher will deal with finding truth and how he knows there is a God. One of Forsythe’s own teenagers, Taylor Mayfield, will teach about shining like stars in the universe – which he does. Courtney Brasher will put her counseling skills to use in talking about laying down the idols we serve. Keith Roberts and Caleb Younse will co-teach a class on how prayer helps make our relationships better. Wyeth Wright will also teach a class.

We will conclude our weekend Sunday morning as Forsythe Church of Christ moves it’s worship assembly to OCS for a final time of praise and worship as Discover comes to a close. Les Ferguson, Jr. will be speaking that morning (9:30). Everyone welcome to come – no ticket needed for Sunday morning!

There are many names you’ll never hear who really make Discover work. Those who staff the hospitality room for youth workers / speakers, stock and sell concessions, serve lunch, sell t-shirts, work the registration table, serve as security … it takes an army to pull this off.

If you haven’t decided to come to Discover, it’s not too late! Head over to our web page to check it out. Also you can register to win the new Duck Commander Devotional by Alan Robertson. You’ll have to hurry on that…time is running out!

If you are helping with DISCOVER you have my greatest thanks. All of our work together, however, is offered up to God in prayer that He will direct our paths and change our hearts on an upcoming weekend in Monroe, Louisiana.
