Church in Momentum 4

For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. …” 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5

Momentum gains in our lives because of the powerful love of God that changes our hearts. “Loved by God.” What an identity!  I wonder how many people believe ‘God so loved the world’ but somehow doesn’t love them? Wracked with guilt over past mistakes and plagued by troubles and struggles in life, some are left with the impression that God has overlooked them in their hour of need. In our weakness of faith we may think that maybe God’s love just doesn’t extend to our lives. But don’t believe the lies. The truth is that God loves you deeply. If you doubt it, look at the cross. Do you believe the Father would allow His Son to die in agony for a world he plans on ignoring? No, God loves you. Moreso….

God has chosen you. CHOSEN … God chooses to save you. And the truth is that He would save anyone. Most people turn away from Him and reject the offer, but the offer remains. If you have given your life to Christ, you have acknowledged that God has chosen you to be in His family. We spend our lives as a part of a nameless faceless sea of humanity. In the stadium, walking in the mall, in the office cubicles, at the schools, and even in churches … we have crowd identity. In Christ you are not nameless, nor faceless. You are not just a part of the crowded room. You are an individual that God loves and chooses to save. And that’s not the end of your story. He is empowering you to gain momentum toward transformation and godliness.

This good news of Jesus Christ and the love of God propels us into further service by virtue of power. When you think you can’t go any further, perseverance rises up within you to keep you moving forward. It is not your own power, but God’s! God is also at work through His Holy Spirit. When you became a Christian the Holy Spirit came to live in your heart (Acts 2:38). As you yield your heart to Him, God’s power brings about His character. A third element of the momentum that God has poured into your life is deep conviction. There is a conviction of our sin that keeps us humble and penitent. There is a conviction of His love, which keeps us fueled for the journey. There is a conviction of the lordship of Jesus Christ, which gives us direction. These are elements we are going to need, and Paul is about to tell us why.
