“and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ” ~ 1 Thessalonians 1:3b
Momentum is gained as we grow in hope. Hope is such a beautiful word. The certainty of our hope, the assuredness that God will do as He said. The One in whom we place our hope is Jesus Christ. In Thessalonians this is a giant theme that points not only to Jesus’ life, death, burial, and resurrection – but to His return. This theme we will write about in a few days. But no matter what obstacles, painful events, or personal hurts we face, our hope remains steady in Jesus Christ. This allows us to grow in endurance … perseverance … momentum.
You probably noticed that in verse 3 Paul has mentioned three foundational principles of the Christian life- Faith, Hope, Love. In his letter to the Corinthians he says that the greatest of these is love.
Endurance (Momentum) is fueled by hope in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our hope because He knows what we are going through, He suffered as a human, and He arose as the Son of God. He is reigning. He is coming. I saw a sign in a yard recently that said, “Wake up America! Read Your Bibles! It’s our only hope!” I think I know what is meant by that, and what subtle political message is contained therein. But our hope is not in the Bible. Our only Hope is Jesus Christ! Maybe it’s a fine line, but a distinction worth noting. There is an excellent reason to put all of our hope in Him. And tomorrow we’ll write about that.
