When the last day comes and someone asks who wrote the greatest songs ever, Fanny Crosby will certainly be in that number. With over 8,000 hymns to her credit one tends to forget that she struggled with many problems and struggles through her life. “An inept doctor left Fanny without her eyesight at six weeks of age after a botched procedure. She said, ‘If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me.'”
“All The Way My Savior Leads Me” is one of her songwriting masterpieces.
All The Way My Savior Leads Me
(1) All the way my Savior leads me-
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy,
Who through life has been my guide?
Heavenly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well;
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well.
(2) All the way my Savior leads me-
Cheers each winding path I tread,
Gives me grace for every trial,
Feeds me with the living bread.
Though my weary steps may falter
And my soul a-thirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! a spring of joy I see;
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! a spring of joy I see.
(2) All the way my Savior leads me-
O the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised
In my Father’s house above.
When my spirit, clothed immortal,
Wings its flight to realms of day,
This my song through endless ages:
Jesus led me all the day;
This my song through endless ages:
Jesus led me all the way.
Fanny Crosby died in 1913. On her tombstone is a line from a song she wrote: “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine. Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine.” “All The Way My Savior Leads Me” is one of the most beloved of her songwriting work.
