20 Days of Prayer #6

A Prayer for the Bible Teachers in our Church

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

2 Timothy 3:14-15 ESV

I say it quite often, and until I am convinced otherwise, I will continue to say it. Ministering to our children is the single most important ministry that our church does. The volunteers who give their time, resources, energy, and attention to our children … my children … are investing in the long term. If you are their teacher, or their children’s church director, or even if they sense that you love them because Jesus loves you, then you will always be remembered throughout their lifetime. These kids will make mistakes, experience heartbreak and tragedy, test the waters of temptation, deal with peer pressure, seek to wander, and you can serve as a compass for them to find their way back into the loving arms of the church. There is no affirmation or celebration that matches your input. “Thank you” simply is not enough recognition for what you do and the burden you bear.

*I am offering a prayer of thanksgiving for you teachers and volunteers and those who love children. You make parenting possible, and I couldn’t imagine having to bear that burden alone. In our children’s ministry, the circle of “true community” becomes complete.

*I am offering up a prayer of perseverance, in that your wisdom and humility form an unlikely couple. While you are teaching, you are also learning from these children.

*And finally, I am offering a prayer of grace on your behalf. You may not have all the answers, and that’s ok. These kids have already forgiven you and are satisfied with your simple love. And while it may not always be easy, and the children may not always be completely compliant, may you offer grace and care to them in the same way we have received grace and care from Jesus and others.
