Notes from Sunday’s Sermon Below
The testimony of Christians throughout the ages is that Jesus Christ has the power to give us a brand new life. That is what I want for myself and what I want for you – and what Paul reminds the Colossians. This is not so much an appeal for the Colossians to come to Christ to find a brand new life, it is a reminder of what they have in Jesus Christ. I think it’s good for us to be reminded of the brand new life we enjoy in Jesus Christ!
A Brand New Life Begins With Christ (Colossians 3:1a). We are raised with Christ in Baptism (Col. 2:11-12). We are born again and again – starting at baptism. We are living in a new Kingdom with a new perspective on what is really important. We are being taught by a new Teacher and we do our best to follow His ways.
A Brand New Life Follows After Christ (Colossians 3:1b-4). Set Your Heart / Mind on Christ (Above). Our will, our decisions, our perspectives. Where did you set your mind this morning? We are to train our minds to think from the perspective of God’s teachings – not the world’s values.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. ~Proverbs 4:23
Guarding Your Heart From Philippians 4:6-81.
– We set our heart on Christ through prayer (vs. 6)
– We set our mind on Christ through trust (vs. 7)
– We set our mind on Christ through thoughts (vs. 8)
We did not just set our mind on Christ at baptism, but we keep on doing so…giving Him our lives over and over. This is following after Christ. Brand new life begins with Christ, follows after Christ…
A Brand New Life Rejects the Old Life (3:5-9). The new life and the old life cannot live together. Put
to death – “deaden, deprive of power the evil desire lurking in your members. (AMP)” The brand new life can’t look like the same old life. Paul’s List of Old Life Practices -Don’t read them quickly … pay attention to your heart!
Sexual Immorality (porneian – from which we get the word pornographic.) Every kind of immoral
Impurity is another term for sexual sin, emphasizing its degrading, shameful aspects. It
embraces the lurid imagination, speech, and deed of a sensual heart or filthy mind.
Lust is “strong desire,” referring to desire for something to which one has no right.
Evil desires – A phrase that reemphasizes a yearning for what is forbidden.
Greed (idolatry). This greed or covetousness (KJV) is not merely the desire to have something, but to have something that belongs to someone else; concerns coveting another’s wife or husband.
Anger and Rage indicate hostility, seeking to harm another. Rage is anger boiling over. Ephesians 4 says this can give the devil a foothold in your life!
Malice refers to a desire that others suffer injury.
Slander (literally, “blasphemy”) is disrespectful speech about God and things associated with God.If we are willing to treat with contempt those who bear God’s image, we show no respect for God .
Filthy language from your lips. Can include vulgar talk, insults, gossip—any of the ways we use words to hurt others
Do not lie to each other. We use lies to gain our own selfish ends or to harm others, which is the
very core of the old life.
These sins have consequences. (Proverbs 6:27 “Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?”) These sins provoke the wrath of God. (6) These sins are part of the old life. (7)
A Brand new life begins with Christ, follows after Christ, rejects the old life, and …
A Brand New Life Looks Like Christ (3:10-11). Renewed in knowledge and image of its Creator. This is why we are to set our minds and hearts above. This brand new life is refashioned in the image of the Creator. Rejection of all social and cultural barriers. We are all part of the same family, all descended from our first parents, all equally guilty of sin, and all equally in need of God’s forgiveness. God calls his people to embrace all who belong to Christ as a new family. Recognition that Christ is all and in all! (11b). Christ is all and in all – cryptic. Christ causes the brand new life, he empowers the brand new life, and He is at the center of the brand new life.
The Brand new life is a new identity, new attitude, and new intention, new action.Do we ever fulfill this chapter completely … or is it an ongoing challenge? I love how Spurgeon spoke of his old life.
I suppose that, if you were to meet your old self, he would
hardly know you, for you are so greatly altered. I dare say he
would say to you, “Come, old fellow, let us go to the theater
or turn into this beer-shop, or let us go home, and find out
some way of amusing ourselves.” You would reply, “No, sir;
I cut your acquaintance a long time ago, and I do not mean
to have anything further to do with you, so you may go
about your business as soon as you like. I am not what I was,
for I have been crucified with Christ, and I am dead, and my
life is hid with Christ in God.” ~ Charles Spurgeon
Are you ready to begin a brand new life today?
