PET PEEVES. I know everyone has pet peeves, and mine was thumped yesterday. I had to go to the grocery store to get a few items. Since we live two blocks from the store, we often go for just a few things. Here’s what was in my basket: a box of Splenda packets, a half gallon of skim milk, a box of banana popsicles, a Weight Watchers frozen treat, and a bag of pretzel sticks. None of that’s interesting except when the checker was through, she placed those five items in THREE bags. Bag one: WW Frozen treat and Splenda. Bag two: milk. Bag Three: pretzels and popsicles. I am just dumbfounded at this. You have two frozen items, a cold item, and two room temp items. Why would anyone spread those cold items out by themselves? I know this girl has no idea how to do this … never trained, obviously. It’s also obvious that she’s not old enough to live in her own place, go grocery shopping, and deal with bags that have both cold and room temp items (which tend to get wet after a few minutes). I think she bagged by virtue of diet food / non diet food. If she thought about it at all. So what did I do? Not much. I calmly rebagged the items with her watching and likely rolling her eyes. Silly? Well, maybe. But it’s Saturday and only 1/3 of my readers will ever know my challenges of grocery bagging. And bring back paper bags please!!! I recently asked for paper bags and got a confused look and confession: I don’t know how to do that. Oh boy. That’s another peeve for another day.
HOT ROOM. I saw on a news story that the Monte Carlo in Vegas was on fire yesterday. I laughed at one line in the news story that said, “People were reportedly evacuated from the Monte Carlo, and new guests were turned away while firefighters struggled to extinguish the flames.” New guests were turned away? Can you imagine how intoxicated you’d have to be in order to try to check into a hotel that was on fire? I hope what happened in Vegas stays in Vegas, ya know?
BIG WIN. 20 year old Sharapova wins Australian Open, her third Grand Slam win. It is not all that interesting to me, but it is to Donna. Of course she already knows he results.
HOT LINKS – I try to put links of interest from other blogs on my blog posts, but I’m not going to do that any more. No, I’m not on strike or anything. If you look at the tabs at the top of this blog there is one that is called HOT POSTS. As I read blogs of interest, I’ll link them there throughout the day. Check it often!
Thanks for stopping by today. I know it hasn’t been much. But for those subscribers who have already pre-paid, I promise to do better. For those who read this blog for free, you get what you pay for!
Have a great Saturday!
john

i am a weekend reader. I am usually finishing up a bulletin and a couple of lessons on Saturday, which means computer time, which means occasional breaks.
it seems the whole week has been slow. at least in my blogging circle. not many posts or comments.
Thanks for stopping by Brian. Hope things go great with your messages tomorrow.
My easiest time to read is the weekend and the blog world always goes dead. Figures.
Anyway… one of my pet peeves also involves the grocery store. Besides hating to go to the grocery store, it really irks me when a checker comments on my purchases. If I choose to purchase three bags of grapes, I don’t want someone questioning my purpose for purchasing three bags of grapes. My grapes are my business!!! :)
On weekends I post in Portuguese now, as people in Brazil tend to log on more during the weekend because they don’t get charged the meter rate (there is a metered rate for them during the work week, and apparently most are still on dial-up).
There’s no explaining pet peeves. I go through the self-checkout line, so I don’t have to deal with people bagging my groceries. People who fail to signal and who drive slowly in the left lane irritate the living daylights out of me.
NB you are singing my song! There’s one checker at our grocery, an elderly black lady that I really like, but she examines each item saying things like, “Oh those are on sale, I need to get one of those today.” and “Do you like those? I tried those once but I didn’t like em.” “Oh somebody is fixing some soup” … I’ll stand in a long line to avoid her register!
Adam, good peve. Me too.
Portugese? You have Portugese readers? Wow… I see new areas of the net remain to be conquered by big poppa.
Maybe the hotel guests were turned away because they requested a non-smoking room.
LOL Frank… that’s clever.
You’re wide awake this morning, Frank, to come up with that one! That’s good.
I can identify with your pet peeve, John. I detest going to the grocery store and the choices in Picayune are limited. Two sub-standard Winn Dixies and Super Wal-Mart.
I shop at Wal-Mart all of the time and have to really work up myself before I can go. I try to limit visits to as few as possible and so go in with fairly long grocery lists most times.
The only way I can endure the experience is to focus on each moment at a time and conquer each item on the list one by one. I know Wal-Mart well enough now that I try to write my list in order and mark off each item as I get it, making it shorter as I go from the front to the back of the store.
If I have any “side trips” to the hinterlands of the store, I have to really be in the right frame of mind.
Then, there’s the checking out process . . .
I won’t even go there. I can’t even do it right now sitting here at home writing about it! My deep depression I’ve been in for months and am still in makes it all extremely difficult because I don’t like being around a lot of people and crowds and Wal-Mart is ALWAYS crowded! Christmas was horrible.
I’m glad you posted today John. I needed some good things to read while I’m sitting here drinking my third cup of coffee and trying to stay warm.
Thanks!
Much love,
Dee
Hi Dee…thanks for stopping by. As bad as I hate going to wal-mart, I cannot fathom going while depressed as well. I need to go there now to get a few items that my grocery store charges so much for … but maybe it’d be better just to pay the extra 50 cents and be done with it! I go to dollar general for my ‘wal mart’ stuff … they usually have it and pretty cheap.
anyway, sounds like you have a good strategy.
Dee, I hope each day is a bit brighter for you. You are loved and appreciated!
i just got back from the grocery and didn’t speak to the people raising money for the homeless.
maybe not these and maybe not towards me, but you know many fundraisers assume everyone who doesn’t give is a selfish, tight-fisted jerk.
Maybe I am insecure, but I always want to tell them, just because we are not contributing to your method/ministry doesn’t mean we don’t care or aren’t helping in some other way.
there’s my grocery store pet peeve
Here in Aus we mostly take our own bags. These are heavy duty bags designed to be used for a couple of years at least.

In France in 2006 Colin went to get some groceries and found they don’t give out bags at all at the store he went to – he had to buy a big carry bag.
The new federal govt here in Aus is talking about legislating against plastic bags.
Of course I knew she won…I watched it live. I was actual pulling for Ivanvich. Got to love the underdogs.
Another grocery store gripe is when the check out person will not turn the bag thing around where you can load your groceries….
My first real job was sacking groceries.
We were trained in teh art of bagging but it was before the day of plastic bags and three items per.
Double bag frozen, eggs and bread on top.

I hope you have a blessed Sunday.
John, looking forward to you being town and us getting together. there are some great folks at forsyth and we look forward to having you in the twin cities.

Ever since I have known of the Central church I have known John Dobbs at Central. God bless you and the family that meets there on your last Sunday together as their full-time evangelist and bless you and Maggie in your new work in LA.
Brian, I also feel some guilt in passing by those who are collecting at the grocery store. I seldom have cash, so I cannot give at the moment – which I do not care to explain to them!
Wendy, thanks for that link. I’ve been wanting to do that..maybe I’ll go ahead and bring my own bag.
Donna…good peeve…. it’s like we’re bothering them by buying groceries sometimes!
Darin, will you come work at my grocery store?
Thanks Preacherman…you too!
Mike, great to hear from you. I look forward to seeing you and working together to reach Ouachita Parish for Christ!
David, you’re such a kind brother. Thank you su much.
